On a dark stage without a set, the light falls on the performer and the acrobatic instrument that will accompany her at all times: a hanging bamboo mast known as maestrim. Hollow inside and rigid on the outside, but also flexible, the bamboo enables an infinite number of gestures.

The minimalist dramturgy is influenced by wabi sabi, a worldview derived from Buddhist teachings, which preaches the acceptance of what is imperfect and transient, with the ultimate goal to empty the mind.

“I believe that the more I empty myself, the more I am open to inspiration, to be present in the scenic moment,” says performer Poema Mühlenberg, who is starring in her first solo show. The Void is Full of Things presents acrobatic dance acts punctuated by pauses and moments of silence.

Poema has been investigating the use of bamboo in performances for 15 years and handcrafted the maestrim especially for this show, using bamboo from her own backyard.
